ABBEY Knaresbrough
Goldsbrough, Scriven
1800 onwards Gerard Hollingworth gerardfireman@aol.com
My great grandmother was born in Goldsbrough/Knaresbrough in 1882 and all of the family lived and were born in the Scriven/Goldsbrough/Knaresbrough area.
William Fairbank Abbey born 1853 son of Richard Abbey and Sarah Fairbank, married Ann Ibbotson and between 1878 and 1888 they had the following children - Frederick Fairbank Abbey, William Ernest Abbey, Esther Mabel Abbey, John William Abbey, John Fairbank Abbey and Emma Gertrude Abbey - my great grandmother.
Richard Abbey was the son of Thomas and Ann Abbey and according to the census returns and the business returns on this site ran a metal and wood turners in Castlegate, Knaresborough through the mid 1800's
Ann Ibbotson was the daughter of John Ibbotson and Esther Smith.
If anyone can assist me with information from 1800 onwards I would be most grateful. I obviously know details of Emma and her family from 1900 which I can pass on but wondered if there were other family members or their ancestors  around? Any help would be appreciated due to living in the south of England.  please email gerardfireman@aol.com

AMBLER Knaresborough any Brenda Crowcroft b.crowcroft@talk21.com
I am researching the names of Scurrah and Collier and Ambler in Knaresborough. I am interested in Ann Collier born 1814 (as given in census) and John Collier her husband who was I believe born in Burton Leonard in 1813. I have not been able to trace any details of Ann's birth but believe they were married in Knaresborough in 1836, Ann's maiden name is possibly Ambler. They were the parents of Ellen Ann Collier who married William Scurrah son of Christopher Scurrah. The marriage tok place in June 1877. After her marriage Ellen Scurrah produced a number of children and quite often was living in Ivy Cottages with her mother. I have not been able to discover the whereabouts of William Scurrah for much of the marriage. Any information would be welcome.

I am trying to find decedents of Norman Austin, (born Knarsborough 1902 - father Arthur Austin), and Hilda Hardy born Harrogate abt 1902 - father Frederick William Hardy of Unity Grove. They were married in Harrogate in 1925. Norman may have died in 1945, but I  would like to find out if there were any children or further descendents from this marriage. I have found references to a Betty and Rodney Austin born in the 1930's, but I am not really sure. Arthur returned to Oxfordshire, where he was born, married again and produced 4 further children. Snaith
any Vivienne Wallace wallacev@netcon.net.au
I live in Bendigo, Victoria, Australia.  I am writing a family history on the Bramley family of Snaith, Yorkshire.  A Thomas Bramley (1788-1857) married Maria Miller and they had a large family.  Three members came to Victoria, two sons went to America and his other children remained in Yorkshire.  His second youngest son was Henry.
Henry (1833- 1874) married a Maria Harrop.  Henry, like many members of his family, was a chemist and druggist and had his business  and was living in Market Place, Knaresborough in the 1881 census.  After his death, his wife and son continued to run this Chemist shop.  Maria died 1902 when living with her  spinster daughter, Catherine Maria.  I am wondering if the shop might still be there in the market place.  Also, I am anxious to know if there is any information on Henry Bramley or any members of his family which I could add to the history. I have photo of Catherine Maria sent by Henry to his brother William, in Victoria.  His sons names were John Henry and Thomas John.

I would be grateful if anyone could supply details about: Christopher Cass b. C1807 m Elizabeth Cass (Nee: ?) b. C 1819 Aldweck or their children: Thomas and George b.C1854
In 1841 Christopher Cass was shown as a Private Solider - Rochdale Barracks.
With a bit of investigation I think that this would have been the 20th (East Devonshire) Fusillers Regiment of Foot - which later became the 2nd Devonshire Rifle Volunteers (Prince of Wales's). Wearing a scarlet uniform with a white facing and a yellow feather.
IN 1838 The Duke of Wellington is quoted to have said "From my own recollection I also declare that of the many distinguished regiments of the British Army which I have had the honour to command, this, the best and most distinguished, is entitled to all the eulogiums I may have bestowed upon it,"
The regiment guarded Napolean at St. Helena, until his death, when 12 of its Grenadiers carried his body to its tem-porary tomb in that island.
Does anybody have any further information about this Regiment or know where I may be able to locate a drawing of the uniform close to 1841?
I would love to here from anyone who has information about Philip Cass (father of Christopher Cass) b.c. 1780 - 1785.

COLLIER Knaresborough any Marilyn Arnold (nee Pape) aja@arniesworld.fsnet.co.uk
I am researching the family of my father and in particular I would be interested in making contact with any of the descendants of my great grandparents William and Sophia Pape (nee Collier) who moved to Knaresborough with their five children in the 1880s.
The eldest child was Lillie Pape born 1874, who married William Parvin at Knaresborough in 1898; they had at least one child, a son called William Alan Parvin born 21 September 1900.
The next chikd was James Collier Pape born 1876, who married Mary Ellen Cassells at Knaresborough in 1901; they had one daughter Doris Sophia Pape born 1903. Sophia (Doris) married Bernard Trafford Oates at Knaresborough in 1931.
The third child was Tom Pape born 1879 who married Mary Eliza Ellis. We believe that they had two daughters Lily Sophia Pape born 1906, and Mary Dorothy Pape born 1907, and a son Donald who we believe to be a twin to Mary Dorothy, but who died shortly after his birth. Lily Sophia married M. Wheelhouse at Knaresborough in 1936, and Mary Dorothy married John Pullan at Knaresborough in 1931.
The fourth chikd was William Henry Pape who we believe only had one son, who was killed and we believe did not marry.
The fifth child was Ernest Leopold Pape, my grandfather.
I would be interested to hear from any person who is researching the names Pape, Collier, Parvin, Oates, Wheelhouse or Pullan, or from anyone who is a living relative of this family.

Another Dawson baptism at St. Joseph's was John Dawson, baptized in 1814, the son of Thomas and Elizabeth (Gerard) Dawson. Was Thomas Dawson a brother of Elizabeth (Dawson) Boddy?
