Mother Shipton's Cave & The Petrifying Well - Historic Park - England's Oldest Visitor Attraction - since 1630
'A careful and dramatic association of history, legend, drama and nature'

Mother Shipton is England's most famous Prophetess. She lived 500 years ago during the reigns of Henry VIII and Elizabeth I. As she grew older, her prophetic visions became known and feared throughout England.

Beside the cave is the famous Petrifying Well, a unique geological phenomenon. It is recorded that people travelled great distances to bathe in its waters, as they were believed to have miraculous healing properties, as early as 1538!

Nestled within a mile of riverside Historic Park incorporating Sir Henry Slingsby's Long Walk and Beech Avenue with stunning views of old Knaresborough. Scenic picnic areas, adventure playground, museum and electronic information points and all day parking - ideal for exploring Knaresborough

Knaresborough Castle and Museum, Castle Yard

Knaresborough Castle

Knaresborough's royal castle stands towering over the River Nidd, a symbol of the wealth and power of Medieval Kings. Most of what remains today was built by Edward II in the early fourteenth century, although there are still remains of King John's moat round the outer castle walls. The Castle Tour reveals the Castle's intriguing past and reveals the lives of its occupants, the unfortunate King's favourite, Piers Gaveston, the beautiful Queen Philippa, and its final ruler King Henry IV.

Join the Castle Tour and discover the mysterious underground Sallyport or explore on foot the Keep and its dungeon. See one of the country's last remaining Tudor Courtrooms in the Museum. And finish with a visit to the Civil War gallery and find the shirt worn by Royalist Sir Henry Slingsby as he went to the gallows.

There's plenty for children with a special Sir Nidd the Knight children's trail, civil war costumes to try on and castle discovery box. Why not test your skill with a game of Medieval putting and bowling?

Got to Knaresborough Castle for lots of information about the history and buildings.

Access:
The Castle is an easy walk from the town centre car parks and bus station, and up a steep picturesque hill from the train station. Limited Pay and Display parking is available at the Castle site, and 4 bays are reserved for visitors with disabilities. There is a park and ride scheme in operation in Knaresborough in the summer period.
The castle grounds are easily accessible and are on a single level. As an ancient monument, many of the areas within the historic structures provide difficulties for visitors with limited mobility. The ground floor of the King's Tower is on a single level, but access to the cellar and King's Chambers ar via steep and worn stairs. Access to the sallyport is down a steep set of stairs, and there's a steep downward slope within the sallyport which can be slippery. Regular access to the Old Courthouse Museum is via a set of steps, but level access from the rear can be provided with prior arrangement. The majority of displays are on a single level, but there are some steps within the museum.

Knaresborough Numeracy Trails

Knaresborough Numeracy Trails is a photocopiable resource that has been designed by a team of practising teachers from Knaresborough. The trails include routes around the Market Square, the Castle, the Railway Station and St. John's Church. The trails are based on the key objectives of the National Numeracy Strategy, and although they are designed for use by pupils working within Key Stages 1 and 2, their relevance as reinforcement activities make them suitable for a much wider age range. The selected activities encourage pupils to use their own problem solving techniques with confidence. This involvement in discovering and finding answers is essential to understanding Mathematics. The trails motivate pupils to explore and debate their own mathematical skills and techniques. Knaresborough offers a wealth of opportunities to explore many areas of the curriculum, and these trails can be incorporated into a day's visit to the town.

To obtain a copy of The Knaresborough Numeracy Trails, send a cheque payable to Forest School for £4, to the Forest School, Park Lane, Knaresborough, North Yorkshire, HG5 0DQ.
