Situated in the Historic Market Town of Knaresborough, the Centre occupies a prime location within a Walled Garden in the grounds of Conyngham Hall and displays many pieces of commissioned artwork.

Our craftshops, which are open to the public include weaving, pottery, paper-making, knitting, jewellery, horticulture, woodwork, music and drama and 3-dimensional work (including Felting and Mosaic). These produce wonderfully creative crafts that make unique gifts which can be found on sale in the workshops and gallery.

The Centre is open to the public and offers an on-going programme of Exhibitions, Workshops, and Performing Arts events. For details of forthcoming events go to Knaresborough Events. The public facilities include a fashionable Cafe Gallery which not only displays fine arts for sale but can also be hired for private functions, from business luncheons to wedding celebrations. There is wheelchair access to all facilities.

The Centre offers unique opportunities (in combination with Henshaws Community Housing facilities) for clients with visual impairment and other disabilities to extend their independence and vocational experience.

In particular, the Centre:

  • Provides a high quality environment, which is safe, enjoyable and reflects the needs of clients.
  • Creates opportunities for clients to participate in all areas of arts activity and to work alongside professional artists in residence.
  • Offers real opportunities for progression in training, education, and employment within an arts culture.
  • Encourages self expression, co-operation, skill sharing and creativity through the education programme.
  • Fosters interaction between the clients and the wider public through staging of events, performances and exhibitions.

The Centre comprises ten workshops, which provide a maximum capacity of 60 clients at any time.

For Educational Organisations

For local Schools and Colleges, the Centre provides a venue where the arts and disability come together. The Centre's Educational Officer co-ordinates a comprehensive programme which offers opportunities for teachers, students and pupils to work alongside professional artists and people with disabilities through:

  • Resident artist workshops
  • Activity days
  • Joint events and performances

These promote awareness and enhanced understanding of disablement in addition to providing first rate tuition and instruction.

Schools and Colleges may also use the Centre facilities to stage exhibitions and performances.

There are also two magnificent courtyards.

The first of these features imaginative planting; a living willow tunnel with paving and seating (made in the Centre's woodwork shop) will provide shelter and shade; a wooden bridge traverses trickling water and the Japanese style garden features bamboo fences, bamboo plants, grasses, acers and azaleas.

The second courtyard is a magical place dominated by an extraordinary wooden storyteller's throne carved by renowned sculptor Colin Wilborn who, in his courtyard design, combined thia with a maze with the central focus being a 200 year old oak tree carved with four doors leading children into an imaginary world. Guest storytellers, such as Roger McGough, encourage and stimulate children's imagination or, alternatively, the area can be used to stage a children's party.

This courtyard also has a raised dais which can be used to stage stories developed by children themselves. The area is also used for performing arts events and is offered to the Community and to schools for performances.
