ELGIE Knaresborough any

Mary Anne Elgie Connell connellm@on.aibn.com
I am researching the Elgie family.
They were living in Brompton by Northallerton in the early 1800s.
William Elgie married Jane Walker. They had eleven children.
Two sons emigrated to Canada - one son William married Mary Ann Watson. William had a shop in Knaresborough for a few years, before declaring bankruptcy and moving to Canada. It is not known the year that William and Mary Ann and children moved to Canada.
son George married Christina Kidson and moved to Canada in 1832 with two children. Their mother, Jane Walker Elgie also emigrated to Canada at the same time.

Any information about the Elgie family would be helpful.

GILBERT Knaresborough

any Diane Puxted chrisdiane1@msn.com
I have for sometime been trying to trace information about my grandmothers family. I have a copy of her birth certificate which gives the following information: Date of birth: 8th January, 1906. Place of birth: Long Lane, Harlow Hill, Harrogate (sub district Knaresborough). Name: Lily Gilbert. Fathers name: Ernest Gilbert, occuption Farm Laborour. Mothers name: Elizabeth Gilbert (nee Fitzsimons). I have been led to believe that her mother may have been Irish. At some point my grandmother travelled to Ireland, her original birth document has a stamp from the Military Posting Office in Dublin dated 5th June 1919. I can also remember her telling me about the bombings in Dublin. She had at least two sisters that I know of - Laura and Emily. There may also have been a sister called Ivy and I believe there were brothers too. I cannot find a marriage certificate for her parents or birth records of any brothers of sisters. Any information would be very gratefully received.

GOMERSALL Knaresborough any Ria Hennessy ria_hennessy@hotmail.co.uk
My primary family of interest are the Walkers from Goldsborough. I am also interested in local Gomersalls.  I know they were in the area at least around the start of the 19th century but I do not know exactly where.  My ancestor William Gomersall was from Bradford but married Flaxby lady Ann Hodges and stayed in Knaresborough area having at least 10 children. I do not know if members of his family were already in Knaresborough - or if any of their children raised families here.  His eldest surviving son was William, a joiner, who left Knaresborough to find work in Sheffield.  Of the five siblings who reached adulthood two moved away and two more were definitely childless so that only really leaves one or two possibilities for descendents.  Ann and her youngest child John Hodges Gomersall died in Knaresborough - he was unmarried.  I know others must be there but I have difficulty finding them so would be dgratefu; for any information anyone has about the family

GOUGH Knaresborough 1900s kdunn004@tampabay.rr.com
On the 1911 census for Knaresborough, my Grandmother was said to have had 3 live births. Only two children are listed on that census and she was only known to have had two children by that time. She did have another child at the end of that year, who was given up for adoption. She was my Mother. She would not have been the live birth at census time. What I need now is to find the name and sex of that '3rd live birth' born between 1905 and 1911. Her other two children were:
GOUGH, Dorothy May 1905 6 F b. Scarboro, York
GOUGH, Douglas William 1902 9 M b. Scarboro, York
Neither of these two births are listed on Family Search or Ancestry etc. so I have no Parish. If anyone can help or suggest I would greatly appreciate it.

Jeff Hampson jeffah@ozemail.com.au
HAMPSON, William Jerome
William Hampson was born at Ashton-under-Lyne, Lancashire, in 1802 and came to Ampleforth in 1813. He took the habit and the name of Jerome 22 December 1818, and was professed 23 December 1819. He received orders as follows: - Minor 25 January 1819, Subdiaconate 10 June 1822, Diaconate 1 August 1823, Priesthood 1826. On the departure of Prior Burgess & his companions for Prior Park (May, 1830) he took up the Procurator's duties, and for a short while, until the election of Prior Towers acted as Subprior. He passed to the Mission in 1834 and had the following series of appointments:- Brandsby 1834-5, Keighley (not a Benedictine mission) 1835-6, Little Crosby 1836, Knaresboro' 1838, Lawkland 1856, Woolton 1862. At this last mission his health failed and he became an invalid. In the latter half of 1866 he retired to Ampleforth, where he died in the following year. He was buried in the hillside cemetery. It seems he was at Knaresboro' for 18 years.

HANNAM Knaresborough
Scotton, Pateley Bridge
1800s-1900s Janette Woodhead lifebeganat43@hotmail.com
I am currently researching my Great Grandfather Matthew Hannam. Born circa 1826. He was married to Isabella Hannam formerly known as Clemmie born circa 1829 at Farnham. Matthew was a stonemason. I believe he had a son called William who is shown on the Scotton 1851 census as 1 year old, but no sign of Matthew. Matthew is on the 1881 census with Isabella and also a granddaughter called Isabella Florence Hannam aged 7, she is still living with them on the 1891 census which is just before Matthew's wife Isabella dies. William shows up again on the 1881 married to Louisa, Born Hatton Warwickshire. They have a son called Matthew Buckley Hannam, I am guessing that Buckley is her maiden name. They are on the 1901 census but have moved to the parish of Warwick St Mary, they now have 8 children. Matthew, Mabel, Arthur, William, Herbert, Harry, Elsie and Albert. I am looking for descendants of these children, Albert is the youngest and is 4 in 1901. My Grandfather Matthew remarried in 1892 to Grace Parsons and they lived in the Knaresborough Union Workhouse, I think as employees as Grace was a nurse. My Gran Annie Hannam was born there in 1893. HARKER Knaresborough and nearby 1700 and 1800's Steven Harker stevenharker@hotmail.com

David and Elizabeth Harker (nee Rudd) married on 10 May 1840 at Knaresborough Parish Church (St. John the Baptist) by Cornelius Hart. Witnesses were John Kay and Eliza Spence. David thought to have been born in Knaresborough about 1821 and Elizabeth in Minskip about 1814(believed christened in Aldborough on 6th July 1814 to Thomas and Ellen Rudd).

David and Elizabeth's fathers were David Harker, a Gardner (like his son) and Thomas Rudd, a Carpenter/Joiner/Wheelwright. The latter believed to have lived in the Minskip then Roecliffe till his death in 1863 at Great Ouseburn.

David and Elizabeth with their sons Charles (born in Savage Yard, Knaresborough in November 1841) and Thomas (born in Harrogate in circa 1845) subsequently moved to Worksop Manor, Nottinghamshire.

Welcome any information/researches about any Harker and Rudd families in Knaresborough or its surrounding villages in the 1700 and 1800's.'

His wife Esther also resides there, as do his children of which his daughter, Elizabeth, is my great grandma. Looking for information in relation to himself or his job.

HEWSON Knaresborough any Douglas Hewson dougie.hewson@howden.com
I have established that my great grandfather was Thomas Hewson who lived with his family In Knaresborough. According to the 1881 census, he lived in Hinkle street and was a grocer's assistant. By 1891 he had moved to 1, High Street and is described as a grocer. I would be very interested if anything is locally known about him, his family or his business. He had a family of ten children and one of his sons, Thomas Henry Hewson, was my paternal grandfather.

According to three different cenuses my 3x great-grandmother, Jane Holmes was born in Knaresborough in 1810/11. This date is verified by her death certificate. I have had no success in finding any baptism so have no further information earlier than her marriage at Leeds Parish Church in 1832.
HOLMES Harrogate any Kath Ward k.ward4@btinternet.com
I am researching my family history and I have obtained a birth certificate for my Great Uncle, Charles Peter Holmes and it show that he was born in 1878 at Victoria Place, Skipton Road in Harrogate.
On the 1881 & 1901 Censuses it showed that he had a brother named George William Holmes and he too was born in Harrogate c1880/1 (He was 8 months old on the 1881 Census). However, obtaining George's birth certificate seem to have become a problem. I have applied to the General Register Office for his certificate but they say that they have no record of him registered in Harrogate!

HORSFALL Knaresbrough, Harrogate 1890-1920 Audrey Meyer raimey@xtra.co.nz

Martha Horsfall, nee Sutcliffe, died in Knaresbrough, Harrogate in 1887. Jonas, Martha's husband went to Australia leaving most of his family behind and never returned to the UK. Martha would have been about 74 yrs when she died and is recorded in the Haworth Parish Cemetery along with her mother and father.

Edith Emily Horsfall, Martha's granddaughter married William Johnson Buckle in March quarter 1892 in Knaresbrough.

I don't know what this family was doing in Knaresbrough, in the 1891 Census, the last before Martha died she was living in Bingley, West Yorks. There were other children in the family, two who followed their father to Australia eventually, and others who married and lived elsewhere. I would be interested in hearing from anyone who has these names in their family.

HORTOR Knaresborough any Roni Frey ronifrey@shaw.ca
I am researching two families that may be associated with your town. Hortor and Whitaker. So far I have found them in the Peterborough area where my great grandmother, Edith or Emily Hortor, was a church organist. I understand that she married a relative called Whitaker. My mother's maiden name was Whitaker. I found death announcements in the Times for W E Hortor (1943) and his wife Mary Amelia (1942) Any information will be gratefully received.
