| JAQUES | Knaresborough | 18th century | Patricia (Boddy) Tharp tharpkd@aol.com Richard Jaques was born at Sawley in 1723, the son of John and Alice (Stoney/Staney) Jaques. His parents soon died and he was raised by his grandfather, Miles Jaques of 'Slenningford and Knaresborough.' In the early 1740s, John married Ann __?__. Her maiden name and their place of marriage is eagerly sought. In the 1740s and 1750s Richard Jaques was a musician in Knaresborough. At least three children were born Ann (birth information unknown), Richard who died in infancy, and Richard born in 1751. In 1757 the family moved to Leeds, whereupon a great deal of information has been gathered. Richard Jr. later adopted Lister as a middle name, reason unknown. After becoming enormously wealthy in London, Richard Lister Jaques came back to his home on East Parade in Leeds and died there in 1806. His sister, Ann, married Henry Baynes of Knostrop Hall. |

| Knaresbroough | any | Bob Smith bobmotoguzzi@btinternet.com I am trying to trace the Kelley (correct spelling) Family History. I have been told that a Charles Kelley born in Dublin in 1860 +-2 years, He went with his Mother and Father to America at the age of 2 years, finding life unacceptable in America they returned 2 years later to the UK and settled in Knaresborough. His Father may have been a Tailor ? In around 1881 at the age of 21 he inherited a sum of money and went to the Greenwich area of London. I have traced all his children in London (all deceased) The 1881 census has no records of any family members in Knareborough apart from some Kelley's who I doubt are related. My feeling is that at the age of 21 the family were in Ireland and so missed the census records, Why did they choose Knareborough and not the native Ireland? they must have dad relatives there, any help would be gratefully appreciated. |

| Knaresborough | any | Kristina Lawson home_yorks@hotmail.com One of my ancestors apparently used to rent / own and visit a house in Knaresborough known as Swinton House. His name was Edwin Augustus Lawson, a publican from Liverpool whose ancestors came from Yorkhire previously. He lived from 1861 to 1914, so he would have visited the town between the 1890s and 1914 I would imagine. Can you offer any suggestions as to how I might find out a) whether the house is still in existence and b) further details about whether he actually owned it and when. His wife (from 1901) was Ella Jeannette (nee Longton), but I do not think she was the house owner as she owned her own property in Liverpool. Any help will be much appreciated. |

C19th/20th | Irene Dale c.dale@virgin.net My grandfather was Edward Pullen who was born on 9.10.1886 in Rainton - parents John & Annie Elizabeth (nee Deighton). I think John & Annie Elizabeth also had children called Annie, Thomas (who was the oldest I think), Richard & George. Edward moved to Keighley before my father was born in 1918. His wife was Mabel Lund who was born Abbey Road, Knaresborough on 23.9.1887 - parents William and Mary Jane (nee Steward). I think William and Mary Jane also had children called Richard and Roger and a daughter, whose name I don't know. I have been unable to find the marriages of John Pullen and Annie Elizabeth on St Catherine's Index, nor have I have been able to find William Lund and Mary Jane's marriage. I thought that it might be helpful if I found them on the 1891 census, but I don't really know where to start. Can anyone help please? My local Family History Society (Huddersfield) doesn't have any census indices that cover the Knaresborough/Ripon area where I believe these families lived. |
