Main interest in Mawtus family who settled in Minskip, near Aldborough, in the late 16th Century, and were resident there until the 1950's. Derived from Malthous; the earliest records in Yorkshire are principally from the area around Fountains Abbey in the 14th Century. From there families so surnamed spread out all around the area to the south of Ripon. In Knaresburgh and its Rulers, by William Wheater, is the following 'Samson Ingleby, Sir William's fifth son, and Brynand his son-in-law, were land grabbers......Among the placemen seeking gain are the Langtons and the Tankards. Thomas Langton, yeoman "of Haragat," who married Elizabeth Slingsby, aunt of Francis, had a son Robert, 1560, a grabber in Feliscliff. In 1564, William Tanckerde, Steward of the Court, and Christopher Mawtus, Clerk, were kinsmen of the Inglebys and Byrnands. The descendants of Thomas Knaresburgh the miller were less prominent.' I'm very interested to find out more information about this Christopher Mawtus.

John Moorhouse was born in 1805 in Newbridge or Clint, the son of Samuel and Martha (Morrel) Moorhouse. In 1829 he married at Ripley Elizabeth Boddy of Raventofts Mill, Bishop Thornton, the daughter of John and Elizabeth (Dawson) Boddy. Both were from Catholic families. They farmed at Clint before emigrating to America in the early 1830s with her brother, Galen and his wife Ann (Rainforth) Boddy. John Moorhouse inherited from his father land at Clint, which is described in John's will (1887) as "my real estate which is laying and being in Yorkshire, England, known as the Clint Estate, near Birstwith Station, Nidd Valley Rail Road, being 22 acres, more or less." I do not have as yet, the land deed and on a recent trip to this area could not figure out where this land was. No doubt, across the old packhorse bridge over the River Nidd on the Clint side, but where??

I am researching the family of my father and in particular I would be interested in making contact with any of the descendants of my great grandparents William and Sophia Pape (nee Collier) who moved to Knaresborough with their five children in the 1880s.
The eldest child was Lillie Pape born 1874, who married William Parvin at Knaresborough in 1898; they had at least one child, a son called William Alan Parvin born 21 September 1900.
The next chikd was James Collier Pape born 1876, who married Mary Ellen Cassells at Knaresborough in 1901; they had one daughter Doris Sophia Pape born 1903. Sophia (Doris) married Bernard Trafford Oates at Knaresborough in 1931.
The third child was Tom Pape born 1879 who married Mary Eliza Ellis. We believe that they had two daughters Lily Sophia Pape born 1906, and Mary Dorothy Pape born 1907, and a son Donald who we believe to be a twin to Mary Dorothy, but who died shortly after his birth. Lily Sophia married M. Wheelhouse at Knaresborough in 1936, and Mary Dorothy married John Pullan at Knaresborough in 1931.
The fourth chikd was William Henry Pape who we believe only had one son, who was killed and we believe did not marry.

Researching the family of Thomas Potterton & Maria Ayrton, originally from Ovenden & Halifax. Thomas was a grocer in Harrogate for many years and his wife ran a boarding house as well. They had 4 children - Annie, Samuel, Maria & Mary Florence. Annie Potterton married Thomas Burrill in 1868; Samuel Potterton married Catherine Mary Pasons in 1875, Maria Potterton married Elijah Papworth in 1878 and Mary Florence Potterton married George Edward Robinson in 1889. I believe Annie Potterton to be my Great Great Grandmother and gave birth to a son in 1865 before she ever married Thomas Burrill and gave him up. She went on to have 2 sons with Thomas Burrill and I believe they may have divorced and she may have had several other children. I do not know if she remarried - she was on the 1891 Census living with her parents and one of her sons by Thomas Burrill. She disappears after that and I can only find her parents and the same son in Harrogate on the 1901 Census. I would appreciate if someone might look up obituaries for Annie's parents & brother in the hope that they might give me some clue as where Annie Potterton Burrill disappeared to. The death dates for them are as follows - Deaths December Quarter 1900 (brother) Potterton Samuel 50 Knaresbro' Volume 9a Page 71; Deaths March Quarter 1910 (Father) POTTERTON Thomas 89 Knaresbro' Volume 9a Page 81; Deaths December Quarter 1911 (Mother) Potterton Maria 87 Knaresbro' Volume 9a Page 119

PRIEST Cattal pre 1841

Richard Priest rpriest@talktalk.net
I am researching the Priest family, who originate around the Cattal area to the west of york.
They have married various families from the local area, including Appleton and Mawson.
I am mostly interested in the family pre 1841, which is proving difficult to trace.

Jane Robinson married Thomas Provost on 8th July 1821 at St John The Baptist, Knaresborough. They moved to Preston, Lancashire in 1838. Jane is 'of the parish' but I think Thomas may have migrated to Knaresborough.

Knaresborough any Marilyn Arnold (nee Pape) aja@arniesworld.fsnet.co.uk
The fifth child was Ernest Leopold Pape, my grandfather.
I would be interested to hear from any person who is researching the names Pape, Collier, Parvin, Oates, Wheelhouse or Pullan, or from anyone who is a living relative of this family.

My grandfather was Edward Pullen who was born on 9.10.1886 in Rainton - parents John & Annie Elizabeth (nee Deighton). I think John & Annie Elizabeth also had children called Annie, Thomas (who was the oldest I think), Richard & George. Edward moved to Keighley before my father was born in 1918. His wife was Mabel Lund who was born Abbey Road, Knaresborough on 23.9.1887 - parents William and Mary Jane (nee Steward). I think William and Mary Jane also had children called Richard and Roger and a daughter, whose name I don't know. I have been unable to find the marriages of John Pullen and Annie Elizabeth on St Catherine's Index, nor have I have been able to find William Lund and Mary Jane's marriage. I thought that it might be helpful if I found them on the 1891 census, but I don't really know where to start. Can anyone help please? My local Family History Society (Huddersfield) doesn't have any census indices that cover the Knaresborough/Ripon area where I believe these families lived.
