| RENDER | possibly Hampsthwaite | until 1830s | Patricia (Boddy) Tharp tharpkd@aol.com Seeking parentage of my ancestor Jane Render who was born in the 1730s or early 1740s. In 1770 she married at Ripon Galen Boddy of Sawley. Later they moved to nearby Raventofts Farm and Mill in the township of Bishop Thornton. It is thought Galen, a stonemason, may have built the mill in the late 1790s. He was a miller there until he died in 1802. After his death, Jane continued to live there with her only son, John Boddy, until her death in 1826. In 1813, a Francis Render, was the godfather at the baptism of Jane's granddaughter, Isabel Boddy at St. Joseph's RC chapel in Bishop Thornton. It is speculated that Joseph Render who became the beloved priest of St. Wilfred's in York, may have been her nephew. There are many Render families at Hampsthwaite. Which one was hers? |

| SCURRAH | Knaresborough | any | Brenda Crowcroft b.crowcroft@talk21.com I am researching the names of Scurrah and Collier and Ambler in Knaresborough. I am interested in Ann Collier born 1814 (as given in census) and John Collier her husband who was I believe born in Burton Leonard in 1813. I have not been able to trace any details of Ann's birth but believe they were married in Knaresborough in 1836, Ann's maiden name is possibly Ambler. They were the parents of Ellen Ann Collier who married William Scurrah son of Christopher Scurrah. The marriage tok place in June 1877. After her marriage Ellen Scurrah produced a number of children and quite often was living in Ivy Cottages with her mother. I have not been able to discover the whereabouts of William Scurrah for much of the marriage. Any information would be welcome. |
| SHANN | Knaresborough | any | Avril Rickarby agr72@britishlibrary.net I am seeking parents of John Shann born 1795, married Mary Ann Daniel of Nun Munkton on 8th January 1815 at St Mary's R.C. Church. They lived in Castle Yard Knaresborough and had eight children, Sarah b.1817, James Valentine b.1820, Thomas b.1824, William b.1828, Mary Ann b.1831, Daniel b.1833, Samuel b.1835 and John b.1837. John being my gt.grandfather. John senior was a Flax Draper. |
| Hampsthwaite, Rothwell, Langscales | any | Karen Wagner BWagner@si.rr.com I am researching my husband's SHANN family who came to America around 1818/1819. The earliest ancestor I can find here is Josephus Shann, born August 1819 in Woodbridge, Somerset County, New Jersey. I believe his father was John Shann who died in NJ in 1829 and his mother may have been Mary Umpleby who I believe died in 1882. All of the other Shann's (James, Sarah, Charles, Jane, John and maybe Edward) who I believe are his siblings, also lived in Woodbridge but were born in England according to the census indexes. Josephus was the first one born here, so I think his mom was probably pregnant with him when then came over. Josephus was a farmer, dabbled in politics and owned a newspaper in Rahway for a short while. He married Anne Crowell whose ancestry goes back to the FitzRandolphs. Josephus and Anne had at least 9 kids, he died in 1913. |

| SMITH | Knaresborough | 1800s/1900s | Margaret Gill gillmarg@iinet.net.au My mother always claimed that one of her ancestors - a great (plus a few more) grandfather died in Knaresborough at the ripe old age of 100 plus. She claimed to have seen a plaque in Knaresborough attesting to his age. My sister says she remembers seeing the plaque when she visited with my mother as a child-this would have been in the 1930s. My sister thought it was outside this relative's house. The best guess is that his name was Smith and I have a Robert Smith of Yorkshire (Woodlesford ?) (my g/g/grandfather) born around 1796 who could have been his son or grandson. Other possible family names are Sugden, Brownridge, Eddison and Binks. If anyone could shed any light on this, I would be most grateful. |

Tony Stead thesteads@macunlimited.net I am looking for information on Charles Ellis Stead, he was my grandfathers Uncle. Born at Throstle Nest, Wortley Nr Leeds in 1872. Stories in the Family suggest that he moved to Harrogate at some point (but I think they meant near Harrogate). Charles Ellis was a qualified Butcher but the family believe that when he moved to Knaresborough he sold Fresh dairy and garden produce to the local hotels and restaurants although his death certificate has his occupation as a poultry dealer. He is believed to have lived in Rose Cottage (Is there a Rose Cottage in Knaresborough that anyone might know about?). His death certificate shows that he died at 15 Calcutt Houses Knaresborough Outer Rd. I have looked through the GRO indexes and have found the following entries which seem to fit in with his life story. Charles married Annie L Webster There is a death entry for an Annie L Stead aged 65 Knaresboro Qtr4 1936 Charles and Annie had one child that I know of Named Albert Vernon Stead. There is a GRO Marriage entry for an Albert Vernon Stead to a Miss Duff in Knaresboro' Qtr4 1932 Also a Death entry for Albert Vernon Stead aged 45 in Knaresboro' Qtr4 1943 I don't know if Albert Vernon and Miss Duff had any children - If anyone can help I would be most grateful I would also love to know if anyone has heard of or knows of a Rose Cottage in Knaresborough and any details of the business that Charles Ellis Stead may have run. any | Ian Hutchinson ian.hutchinson@hotmail.com I am researching any connections with the Taylor family of Knaresborough and the origins of the Whitehawk name. My GGG Grandfather was Thomas Taylor (a miller) and he and his wife Ann (b1806) had 2 sons Robert (bap 1835) and William Whitehawk (b1828 d1859). William was married twice, first to Mary Lawn and then to Jane Hemshall. William and Mary had three children Thomas (b1852) Mary Ann (b1851) and John (b1857). Descendants include: Pawson, Pollard, Johns, Crawley, Gledhill, Baldwin and Atkinson. I am guessing that Whitehawk connection is a maiden name (perhaps Ann's).
