WALDER Leeds any

Jean Murray eeh_oop@yahoo.co.uk

Surname     Walder
Forename   John Henry
Year of birth ca 1861

John Henry Walder appears on the 1861 census aged 2 months at 34 Harper Street, Leeds. His parents were John born ca 1832 in Ireland an iron turner & Mary Ann Leafhead born ca 1833 in Leeds. John & Mary Ann also had Mary born 1851, Rosina born 1855 & Elizabeth born 1858. I can find no reference in the BMD index on ancestry.co.uk for his birth. Can anyone help with details of his birth and/or baptism, please?

Harper St was part of Leeds civil parish, north east ward but no ecclesiastical parish is mentioned on the census sheet. It runs from New York St northwards to George St. Does anyone know which parish church it would be served by & if there are any non-conformist chapels nearby.

WALSH Knaresborough 1896 - 1942 Michael Franklin mikefranklin5695@aol.com
William Walsh was my grandfather, born 1896 we believe in the Leeds area but then shortly the family moved to Knaresborough. My late grandmother told my auntie that William was a choirboy/altarboy in Knaresborough.
Information about him is sparse as he died in 1942 from injuries sustained at Dunkirk and my mother was evacuated during the war.
We have recently discovered he was awarded the Military Medal in 1918 in France and the notification of his award stated he was from Knaresborough.
As with many soldiers returning from the Western Front he never talked about his experiences. I have his medal and accompanying notifications which has generated my interest in him. I never met him as I was born in 1949.
WALTERS Knaresborough 1800s Chris Broddle Christinebroddle@aol.com
My g.g.grandfather was HORNER WALTERS and is shown as born in KNARESBOROUGH on the 1851 census for Hull (age 39). This would make his birth about 1809 -1812 but I haven't been able to find him in the parish register.
I have traced Trade Directories for Hull from 1839 and 1843 that show him as a cordwainer in Hull. He married Catherine Hall in 1836 (children:Robert,James,Isabella,Horner,Jane Ann,Amelia Kate). From 1861 until his death in 1896 he lived in Keldgate, BEVERLEY.
I would also be interested in the birth of his son Horner as it does not appear to be registered in Hull either (1848-1850).

WATSON Knaresborough area 1900s Joan Cambage jaycam@wainsshetlands.fsnet.co.uk
I am trying to research my great aunt, born TAMAR CRAVEN at Castleford in 1874. She married John Anderson Watson in 1893 and I have lost her after that. She is shown on the 1901 census, but no trace of her husband. It is more than possible that she was widowed and may have remarried, as she was known to have children who eventually moved to another inn in the area, one with a waterwheel. She is known to have kept the Mother Shipton Inn at some stage, and also to have lived at Bridge House in Knaresborough. She was also known to have dabbled in antiques, but this may have been a hobby rather than a profession. In view of her unusual christian name, if anybody has any information at all, I would be more than grateful to receive it.

He married Alice Thorpe in 1888 at Doncaster and they moved to Harrogate in the late 1890's where he worked as a gardener. Their children were John Henry Thomas, George William, Ernest, Alice Victoria and Frederick.

WHEELHOUSE
Knaresborough any Marilyn Arnold (nee Pape) aja@arniesworld.fsnet.co.uk
I am researching the family of my father and in particular I would be interested in making contact with any of the descendants of my great grandparents William and Sophia Pape (nee Collier) who moved to Knaresborough with their five children in the 1880s.
The eldest child was Lillie Pape born 1874, who married William Parvin at Knaresborough in 1898; they had at least one child, a son called William Alan Parvin born 21 September 1900.
The next chikd was James Collier Pape born 1876, who married Mary Ellen Cassells at Knaresborough in 1901; they had one daughter Doris Sophia Pape born 1903. Sophia (Doris) married Bernard Trafford Oates at Knaresborough in 1931.
The third child was Tom Pape born 1879 who married Mary Eliza Ellis. We believe that they had two daughters Lily Sophia Pape born 1906, and Mary Dorothy Pape born 1907, and a son Donald who we believe to be a twin to Mary Dorothy, but who died shortly after his birth. Lily Sophia married M. Wheelhouse at Knaresborough in 1936, and Mary Dorothy married John Pullan at Knaresborough in 1931.
The fourth chikd was William Henry Pape who we believe only had one son, who was killed and we believe did not marry.
The fifth child was Ernest Leopold Pape, my grandfather.
I would be interested to hear from any person who is researching the names Pape, Collier, Parvin, Oates, Wheelhouse or Pullan, or from anyone who is a living relative of this family.

WHITE Knaresborough any Margaret Barrett mcbar@gotadsl.co.uk
I have researched my mother’s maternal line to my great grandfather EDWIN WHITE who was born in Knaresborough about 1829. I found him as a 12 yrs old on the 1841 census but I think he was an orphan as he is shown living with 3 other children, all with separate surnames, with a Rebecca Walker ( a milk woman) and a William Pick (a brick cutter). In 1851 he is married to Fanny and they live at the Gate House & Prison. In 1861 he has 4 children and lives at the Barrel Inn. Has anyone any information about him before 1841?

WHITLEY Fewston any Frances Hoffman fhoffman@kw.igs.net
I am researching the WHITLEY family.
William Whitley was the illegitimate son of spinster, Dorothy Whitley. He was born at High House, Fewston, Yks. on 28 Jan 1838. His birth was registered by Dorothy on 01 Feb 1838. He was Baptized at Fewston parish 23 Feb 1838. At the time of the 1841 & 1851 census, Dorothy was employed by bachelor farmer Henry Scott at Moor Park Farm, Menwith-with Darley. Later in life young William Whitley named himself William Henry Scott Whitley. I'd like to learn the reason for this. Was he Henry Scott's biological son? I have been unable to find a Will for Henry Scott, who died 29 Nov. 1852.
