6OOth Anniversary of the Shrine of Our Lady of the Crag
The 600th anniversary of the formation of the Shrine of Our Lady of the Crag will be celebrated in Knaresborough on 5th July 2008.

In addition to street collections there is a programme of activities as follows:

  • The chapel will be open to visitors all day, 10 am – 5 pm
  • An illustrated talk on shrines of Mary, at 12.00 – 12.45 and repeated at 4.00 – 4.45, in Knaresborough House. This will be given by Chris Maunder, a theology lecturer at York St John University. You will see how Knaresborough takes its place in a national and international network of shrines
  • An ecumenical service at the chapel, 2.30 – 3.30 pm. People of all denominations (and none) are very welcome. Carmelites and Benedictines will be in attendance, two religious orders with historical links to shrines of Mary.
  • A quiz, at 7.30 pm (starting strictly by 8 pm and proceeding through the evening), at Knaresborough House. The quiz will include a section with historical questions as well as many others on general knowledge. You can bring your own drinks, but food will be provided as part of all an-in ticket of £6. There will also be a raffle.

Unveiling of Blue Plaque at the Shrine of Our Lady of the Crag

Knaresborough Civic Society's seventh Blue Plaque is sited at the entrance to the Chapel of Our Lady of the Crag on Abbey Road. On Saturday 13th October 2007 Father George, of St. Mary's Church, unveiled it in a ceremony attended by local dignitaries.

The plaque reads: In 1408 the Chapel of Our Lady of the Crag was excavated by John the Mason traditionally in thanksgiving for his young son being miraculously saved from falling rock. Permission for the shrine was granted by King Henry IV.
