Knaresborough Town Council |
|
Knaresborough Town Council is a parish council that has, like many of the large urban parishes, resolved to be known as a Town Council, which carries the right to a Town Mayor instead of a chairman.
Knaresborough is one of the 143 parishes within the Harrogate Borough Council area, which includes Ripon, Pateley Bridge and Boroughbridge. The Town Council has 15 members (councillors) with 5 councillors representing each of the three wards in the town, Knaresborough King James, Knaresborough East Ward and Knaresborough Scriven Park Ward. Elections for the council are held every four years when all of the seats are open to be contested. Town and parish councils have a limited range of powers but are consulted about, and can influence decisions on, a wide range of functions and services outside their control.

Mayor of Knaresborough
Councillor Pam Godsell receiving her chain of office from retiring Mayor, Peter Guest
New mayor takes over for second spell in role
THE new Mayor of Knaresborough, Coun Pamela Godsell, began her year of office
last Friday, when the official mayor making ceremony took place at Knaresborough
House.
Retiring Mayor Coun Peter Guest handed over the chain of office to Coun Godsell,
but before that performed his last official duties as Mayor.
Jo Walton was presented with the Environmental Award for her efforts to make Knaresborough a plastic bag-free town. She had sourced environmentally-friendly cotton bags, which are on sale in many outlets in town and have proved very popular.
Mrs Walton said: “ I couldn’t have done this without the help of Knaresborough Chamber of Trade and Commerce and would like to thank Chamber for supporting me.”
For the Community Cup, Coun Guest had chosen Mark Firth, a member of Renaissance Knaresborough, who has been involved in many projects, including the Explore Knaresborough leaflets and the Town Windows project.
Mr Firth said: “We want to get people to appreciate what’s above street level. We have many talented artists in Knaresborough.”
Coun Godsell is no stranger to the duties of the town mayor, as this is her second term of office.
A town councillor for 13 years, Coun Godsell, who lives in Knaresborough, previously held the position in 2004/05. Once again Coun Godsell has picked the Frazer Theatre as her chosen charity and her husband Robert will be her consort.
The Deputy Town Mayor for this Civic Year is Coun Mavis Clemmitt, whose Deputy Mayoress will be Mrs Brenda Dixon.
The Mayor presented Long Service Awards to Coun Richard Hall and Mr John Smith and the retiring Mayor presented the Rev David Ely with £8,000 raised for COGS, the appeal to raise funds for the re-development of Gracious Street Methodist Church Hall, over his two years of office.
