Knaresborough Town Council |
|
Knaresborough Town Council is a parish council that has, like many of the large urban parishes, resolved to be known as a Town Council, which carries the right to a Town Mayor instead of a chairman.
Knaresborough is one of the 143 parishes within the Harrogate Borough Council area, which includes Ripon, Pateley Bridge and Boroughbridge. The Town Council has 15 members (councillors) with 5 councillors representing each of the three wards in the town, Knaresborough King James, Knaresborough East Ward and Knaresborough Scriven Park Ward. Elections for the council are held every four years when all of the seats are open to be contested. Town and parish councils have a limited range of powers but are consulted about, and can influence decisions on, a wide range of functions and services outside their control.

Mayor of Knaresborough
The Mayor
of Knaresborough Councillor Peter Guest
Extract from a speech at the Town Mayor Making by Councillor Christine Willoughby
As you all know, Peter needs no introduction, we were all here last year for Peter’s Mayor making – I will not speak at great length about Peter’s upbringing in Armley or his qualifications for the job of Knaresborough’s Mayor, as this was all done last year! However I will mention that Peter works incredibly hard for this town, his dedication knows no bounds, just look at a list of organisations he is involved in, the Lions, Knaresborough in Bloom, Renaissance Knaresborough, Friends of Bebra Gardens, governor at Aspin School to name but a few.
It is unusual for a Mayor to serve for more than one year – most Mayor’s, I feel are probably very relieved when their year is over and they can hand the reins to someone else, - however this is not the case for Peter – he feels that making useful contacts and spreading the word about how marvellous Knaresborough is, is a task which he has taken on, but which is not yet complete. Lesley has a theory about why Peter wanted to be Mayor for a second year – something to do with having no time to clean the swimming pool at Watergate Haven!
Knaresborough has a wonderful asset in it’s Mayoral team – Peter and Lesley have thrown themselves into the parts of First Citizens with incredible energy and zest. They make very good ambassadors for the town.
I know they both enjoyed last year enormously and Lesley tells me that some highlights of the year were making new friends and meeting other town mayors. Both Peter and Lesley enjoyed their visits to Menwith Hill, and their trip to Bebra, everyone agrees, was a great success.
Other highlights of the year include the Bed Race, Remembrance Sunday and being on the Harrogate and District Access Group and the Knaresborough Friendship and Leisure Committee also known as the Old People's Welfare Association.
Other noteworthy events were the
whole of the feva festival, the panto at the Fraser theatre and the annual
Christmas lights switch on.
